On behalf of the Township of Montclair, each year we run basketball teams in regional winter leagues for girls and boys in grades 5 through 8. We also offer non-competitive spring and fall skills sessions. Many players go on to play at the high school level and two of our 'PAL kids' have gone onto professional sports careers in the WNBA. Our approach to basketball incorporates life skills.
The Montclair PAL also operates a Summer camp, Bobby Hurt's Basketball 101 Skills and Drills Camp, based in the Montclair High School gym.
Junior Police Academy and the Explorers programs give Montclair youths the opportunity to learn about the field of law enforcement.
For middle schoolers, grades 6-8, we offer the Junior Police Academy and for older teens (9-12) we have the Explorers.
Participants get a taste of what is means to be a Police Officer in a safe environment similar to an actual police recruit training program. The Montclair PBA Local #53 are partners.
The Montclair Police Department now has an officer who had participated as a youngster!
In 2023 we will reactivate a program that became a COVID casualty, Friday Night Fun Nights.
These had been held regularly for years, until the pandemic hit. Hosted inside the Wally Choice Fieldhouse in Glenfield Park, these Fun Nights target specific age groups with active games, ping pong, pool, video games and movies.
Each Spring with the support of the Montclair Police Foundation, The Township of Montclair Recreation Department and Eureka Lodge #54 we host an annual fishing derby at Edgemont Park. For many youngsters, it is their first time holding a rod and reel. A local partner, the Montclair Anglers, provide guidance and support to the competitors.
