On behalf of the Township of Montclair, each year we run basketball teams in regional winter leagues for girls and boys in grades 5 through 8. We also offer non-competitive spring and fall skills sessions. Many players go on to play at the high school level and two of our 'PAL kids' have gone onto professional sports careers in the WNBA. Our approach to basketball incorporates life skills.
The Montclair PAL also operates a Summer camp, Bobby Hurt's Basketball 101 Skills and Drills Camp, based in the Montclair High School gym.
Junior Police Academy and the Explorers programs give Montclair youths the opportunity to learn about the field of law enforcement.
For middle schoolers, grades 6-8, we offer the Junior Police Academy and for older teens (9-12) we have the Explorers.
Participants get a taste of what is means to be a Police Officer in a safe environment similar to an actual police recruit training program. The Montclair PBA Local #53 are partners.
The Montclair Police Department now has an officer who had participated as a youngster!
Friday Night Fun Nights is a much-awaited monthly event that promises an fun-filled experience for young children. The program aims to provide a safe and supervised environment for kids to socialize and have fun.
The activities include table tennis, pool, big-screen video games, interactive games and crafts.
Though temporarily halted due to COVID, the program is set to resume once the new Wally Choice Community Center opens in late 2023.
Every August for the past 16 years the Montclair community donates about 400 backpacks loaded with school supplies.
The Montclair PAL worked to start this initiative that has grown to nearly 100 organizations and private businesses.
The Backpack Giveaway event includes food, entertainment and outreach from community organizations.
Each Spring with the support of the Montclair Police Foundation, The Township of Montclair Recreation Department and Eureka Lodge #54 we host an annual fishing derby at Edgemont Park.
For many youngsters, it is their first time holding a rod and reel. A local partner, the Montclair Anglers, provide guidance and support to the competitors.
A new program coming online later in 2023 is a sports writing program.
Montclair residents include many current and former sports writers and sports figures and a program is now emerging. This program will encourage young people to improve their writing skills through covering games and interviewing players.
